Quilt binding- How to make & attach it

In this video tutorial I show you how to take the proper measurements to make your own binding for a quilt. This video covers beginner sewing & quilting techniques. I show you how I attach shorter strips of the binding fabric to make one long continuous strip, how to attach it to your quilt, mitering the corners and finishing the binding edges.

There are tons of different ways of making and attaching your binding. I do not claim this method to be the “right” way of doing binding. This is just one way that I find has been easiest for my students to learn.

Happy sewing and quilting!

  1. I'm a 70 year old newbie at quilt making and because of you I'm finishing my first little quilt. I can't tell you how much your tutorials have helped me. I have some errors but that was before I found you. Thank you sooooooo much.

  2. Oh!! I thought of another question…I am trying to apply satin blanket binding to some fleece fabric to create a baby blanket…the problem I am having is: the satin tape keeps snagging on my feed-dogs which is ugly!! got any suggestions???

  3. Again, as others before me have expressed: AWESOME!!! Concise, easy to understand, and easy to view (the filming was professional)…only one question…. what is the name of your cute little "palm iron"?? I would love to have one, are they listed on Amazon??? hank you again for your tutorial, I really needed it!! – Jeanie

  4. You are such an excellent teacher! I have a challenging technique for joining the ends of the binding but your method seems so much easier. I'm trying that on my next quilt. Thanks so much….keep 'em coming!

  5. I always enjoy your videos and learn so much from them.
You are my favorite sewing teacher!!
I did my first binding on a quilt tonight and it turned out great. 🙂
I however did a stitch in the ditch on the top to finish the binding.

  6. great video, MY dear friend taught me how to make crazy quilts, and lab blankets, to name a few, and since she moved i haven't been sewing as often, so i had forgotten how to do the binding! this video was really helpful!

  7. can you use the steam a seam and then topstitch also? I like the idea of the steam a seam to help me make turning the binding easier, but I would feel more comfortable stitching it too.

  8. OH MY GOD! YES!!!!! This is sooooooo easy!!! The last step where you attach the two ends has confused me so much from watching other videos, and your way is so easy!!! Thank you!!!

  9. excellent tutuorial — thank you! thank you for showing clearly & carefully how to do the corners; thank you for editing & for being brief yet fully complete
